This By Bashir Murtaza · May 23rd 2020 The Wilks formula is a powerful tool to help people see how strong they truly are. Wilks FormulaA Wilks formula allows a person to measure their strength. A wilks score is typically used amongst powerlifters to measure their strength against one another. The formula was created by Robert Wilks. What makes the Wilks formula so great is that even though (especially in powerlifting) you may be in different weight classes from someone else, you’re able to compare your strength. It’s also a great tool of measuring where you’re at in terms of strength in ratio to your body weight.Examples of strengthThere is usually a misconception that solely, whoever can lift the most weight is stronger. That seems like the most logical scenario but what’s often not taken into the equation is the person’s weight. Let’s say we have 2 males named Jerry and George. Jerry and George can both squat 350 lbs, bench 235 lbs, and deadlift 400lbs. However Jerry weighs 140 lbs and George weighs 190lbs. Jerry is significantly stronger than George. If you use the Wilks calculator you can see that Jerry has a Wilks score of 362.37 whereas George has a Wilks score of 291.87.Gender plays a huge role in it as well. Sticking with the same numbers, but changing to it a female, you’ll see that a woman who at 140 lbs lifting the same amount has a Wilks score of 476.96, and a woman at 190 lbs has a Wilks score of 393.51. These 2 women would both be stronger than Jerry and George. Get a Free Guide! 2025-03-27App will be valuable for you as a powerlifter. Here are some neat features that let you keep track of your powerlifting journey without digging too deep into the analytics.Accessible Overview of Muscles WorkedWith StrengthLog Premium, you’ll have access to the muscles worked widget on the home screen in the app. This map shows how well you’ve trained each muscle during the last seven days. If you have zero registered sets, the area will be grey. To get a muscle to turn bright red, you need to do at least ten sets/week. This screenshot shows how well I’ve worked my muscles the last week. (Don’t tell my coach I skipped my ab-training yesterday …)Create Your Own GoalsMaybe you noticed the small circles in the screenshot above? They are the goals I’ve created. Earlier in this article, I wrote about how your e1RM could be an important tool for measuring your progression in powerlifting. Therefore, I’ve made a goal for each competition lift to be able to quickly check in and see if it’s moving in the right direction.Helpful Tools and CalculatorsWe’ve packed the app with an excellent battery of calculators, too. As a powerlifter, I think you might find these extra useful:1RM calculator. That is exactly what it sounds like. Just enter the weight and number of reps, and the app will tell you your estimated 1RM according to Epley’s equation.IPF/Wilks calculator. The calculator works for equipped and classic powerlifting and bench press, showing your results in IPF GL and Wilks points.Attempt Selection for Powerlifting Meets. Enter your target weight for your meets, and the app will present a suggestion for all your attempts.Warm-up for Max Attempt. Enter your target weight for the day, and the app will present a warm-up, complete with suggested resting time between each set. You can, of course, start a workout with these warm-up sets directly from the calculator.Plate Calculator. The plate calculator is already included in your active workout on all barbell exercises. But it’s also available on its own from the calculator section in the app. You can create several profiles and ensure the calculator has the same number of plates as your gym.Specific Programs That Will Increase Your TotalIn addition to all these features and tools, I still haven’t mentioned one of the best things! StrengthLog has a big library of programs and workouts that are suitable for powerlifters at all levels.

A 450 Wilks will generally be competitive at a national-level meet. Mutants like Sergey Fedosienko manage to hit 600+ Wilks Scores, but that’s bordering on incomprehensibly strong. You’ll notice a stark difference between what’s necessary for a 450 Wilks, and what’s necessary for a 500 Wilks. To hit a 500 Wilks, you generally need to be very jacked and very short. However, a 450 Wilks should be perfectly attainable for most people. I’ll give this the same caveat I’ve given everything else in this series, though: These are ballpark figures. There are taller people who’ve hit Wilks Scores over 500, and short, super jacked people who can’t. These are just rough estimates. There are a couple of things on that chart I’d like to point out:Related to the article on relative strength and Wilks’ bias against normal-sized people, you see that the heights increase slowly up to the 90kg class and skyrocket thereafter. That’s because of how Wilks is calculated. In order to have the same Wilks score, people from about 65-90kg need to have more relative strength than people in the 60kg weight class, or people in the 100kg class and aboveYou’ll also notice the large height discrepancies between a

2025-04-08450 and a 500 Wilks, especially in the higher weight classes. The basic takeaway is this: If you’re above 180cm (about 5’10”) you likely need to be at least 90kg/198lbs to be highly competitive, though if you’re aiming to be a world-class lifter, you should probably be aiming for the 110kg/242 class or above (or 105kg/231lbs in the IPF). However, even if you’re really tall, as long as you make your way into an appropriate weight class, you should still be able to be highly competitive (Yao Ming’s hanging out in the very bottom right corner of the chart – in other words, unfathomably tall). Now, obviously there are exceptions, and by definition, the very best lifters in the world are bound to be the exceptions to just about any rule. If strength were solely based on fat free mass per unit of height, Jesse Norris would be “too tall” (at 5’9″/175cm) to total 2015lbs/914kg at 198bs/90kg, and Josh Hancott would certainly be too tall (at the same height) to total 1521lbs/690kg at 163lbs/74kg. However, it is undeniable that, on the whole, the best lifters in every weight class tend to be noticeably shorter than the other guys nipping at their heels.I’ll also note, these predictions based on the formulas I’m using match Boris Sheiko’s weight class recommendations very nicely, which basically split the difference between height prediction for a 450 Wilks and the height prediction for a 500 Wilks:Weight Class (kg/lbs)Height (cm/inches)60/132155/6167.5/148160/6375/165164/64.582.5/181168/6690/198171/67.5100/220174.5/69110/242177.5/70125+/275+186/73Water CutsSince this is an article about choosing a
