Sin embargo, muy pocas versiones han sabido, han podido o, peor, han querido leer bien al escritor francés, reduciendo el rico contexto histórico de su folletín –las disputas entre católicos y protestantes durante la Guerra de los Treinta Años– a un marco pintoresco en el que se desarrollan las aventuras de sus protagonistas. Desde luego, Dumas domina y privilegia la acción de capa y espada; el placer de narrar por narrar que caracterizó las letras europeas del Renacimiento y la Edad Moderna. Pero Los tres mosqueteros también destila, y no poco, pesar por el destino trágico de la condición humana. Dumas fue coetáneo de Balzac, y ambos comparten en sus obras esa querencia por advertir al mundo de los cuchillos del cinismo. Esa es la parte que el cine escamotea al público, en particular las adaptaciones De Hollywood que repiten los clichés que fijó la versión de 1948 dirigida por George Sidney.A partir de un guion de Matthieu Delaporte y Alexandre de La Patellière, sus colaboradores en la saga Papá o mamá, el director Martin Bourboulon presenta esta nueva versión -–primera parte de un díptico que se completará con Los tres mosqueteros: Milady, ya rodada– que parece concebida precisamente para hacer justicia al Dumas histórico, pero sin renunciar a la vivacidad y el vértigo que caracteriza el tono general de las correrías de sus personajes más icónicos. Se podría debatir cuánto de ese historicismo se debió a Dumas y cuánto a su «negro», el historiador Auguste Maquet, pues no termina de estar claro quién de los dos descubrió primero las Memorias de D´Artagnan (1700), de Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras, la obra que inspiró Los tres mosqueteros. Ya fuera uno u otro, o los dos al alimón, porque está documentado que visitaron varias bibliotecas de París y Marsella, el caso es que el cine le debía a Athos, Portos, Aramis y D´Artagnan una película que alternara sin miedo una visión aguda de aquella Francia de las guerras de religión, que Dumas empleó para hablar en presente de la revolución de 1830 y el reinado de Luis Felipe I, con un relato sobre la amistad, el orgullo y la rebeldía de los hombres de armas.Dumas, no conviene olvidarlo, se educó por su cuenta leyendo el teatro de Shakespeare y viendo las representaciones que de sus obras preparaba la Comédie française en París, y entre sus lecturas favoritas se encontraban las comedias de Marivaux y Beaumarchais, la literatura de ideas de Voltaire y las novelas eróticas de Choderlos de Laclos. Something to watch when you want to relax and not have to think about the plot of the movie. Chris O'Donnell is impish if a bit callow in the lead but the real show is musketeers anyway and there is where the movie excels. Keifer is suitably brooding as Athos and Charlie Sheen, before he became a surly twitchy mess, is a charming Aramis. The standout however is Oliver Platt going full on ham as Porthos giving a delightfully over the top performance and walking off with the picture whenever he is on screen. Rebecca De Mornay also seems to be having a good time enacting the villainous Milady de Winter, she's sexy and silky. Lastly there is Tim Curry positively consuming the scenery as Cardinal Richelieu, in his flowing red robes he and Oliver Platt are in a dead heat for biggest scene stealer. Sentence "Thank you for showing me the special secret thrust father." And then it's never mentioned ever again. The fight scenes in this movie are hysterical and easily the best part of this film. Oh, and Planchet rips a tree out of the ground and beats a man with it… good times. 6. The Return of the Musketeers (1989) This movie is low in the rankings because Aramis is mostly left out of the film. Instead, he is cooped up in his weed tower, surrounded by women and replaced with Athos' son Raul. Don't get me wrong Raul is a fun addition, but it's just not the three musketeers without Aramis. Yeah, this movie doesn't have much to offer other than that. 8. Barbie and the Three Musketeers (2009) Oh god, where do I begin? The talking cat? The terrible animation? The questionable plot? The only good thing about this movie is the positive message of women working together, and Tim Curry voices the villain. 9.
